History of Greek Dance:

There are many different styles of dance depicted throughout the mainland and coastal complexes of Greece that fit their own way of life and being.  The coastal areas, for instance, show a more flowing aspect to their dances.  The mountain regions depict more sharp, staccato movements with a rise and fall motion.  There are some 3000+ dances in Greece herself, with 4 being a common thread throughout them all… Kalamatiano (the national dance of Greece), Syrtos, Hasapiko and Syrtaki.  These dances are the most commonly performed at festivals, weddings, baptisms and other celebrations and events.  Some dances are couples dances, while others are dances done in a circular fashion while holding hands.  Occasionally, you see a lone dancer performing! Dance styles can be light, jumpy and cardiovascular, some slow and heavy, some use speed and agility, while others use sharp movements and are strict in form.  Soldiers danced to get motivated and pumped up before going to war or battle.  Other dances were more social and ritualistic in nature.  Both women and men have their dances they perform separately, while others are done in mixed groups.  Invariably, all have their solos and tricks that lead dancers do, and this is what makes it most fun to watch!  It’s exciting, exhilarating and very athletic!

All of this, coupled with the decorative and different regional dance costumes, makes these dances even more fun to watch! We are pleased to announce that we have reformatted our dance program to fit the needs of our parish.  We now have 4 dance groups of different age levels that will be performing throughout the year at different events, starting with our Greek Festival.  We will also be hosting some fund-raising events throughout the year so we can earn money to attend conferences and work towards funding for our new dance space at the new location for St. Demetrios Church.

All of us in the Pan-Athenian Dance Groups welcome and thank you for coming to the Tucson Greek Festival! Our dance participants and their families have worked hard to re-establish the St. Demetrios Dance Ministry and are very much looking forward to bringing you into our world of Greek dance.  We hope that you enjoy your weekend being surrounded by the sights and heavenly smells of Greece!  Audience participation is a MUST when it comes to festival dancing, so don’t be bashful when it comes time to invite you to dance with us!  We hope you enjoy our performances as much as we enjoy bringing you our dances to both modern and traditional Greek music from many regions of Greece!  Eat, drink (responsibly!) and be Greek for the weekend!!  OPA!!! **Pictures can be taken with the dance groups prior to or following all dance performances to commemorate your time with us!**
